Reviews

Dead Space is an absolutely fantastic sci-fi survival horror game. It's Resident Evil 4 in a Doom 3 setting. It's well-paced, gruesome, and legitimately made me jump out of my seat a few times. I know that a game is scary when something surprising happens and my instinct is to RUN. It doesn't matter that I have a flamethrower in my hands, I am getting the F&*@ out there there! The graphics are solid, and the style compliments the action very well. Battling monsters is disgusting and satisfying. The main combat mechanic revolves around blowing the limbs off of mutant space monsters. You can pump bullets into bodies, but maximum damage is scored by blasting off arms, legs, and other unnamed appendages. Every battle leaves behind a mess, and each slain monster feels like a real accomplishment. The control scheme of Dead Space is the best that I've experienced in a survival horror game. There are a bunch of skills and abilities that need controller real estate, so there's a bit of a necessary learning curve - but once you get the hang of things moving then controlling your character is fairly fluid. The movement isn't as fluid as your average first-person-shooter, but it's a step ahead of your average slow-paced scarefest. Dead Space's UI, or rather the absence of one, is another major step forward for the genre. The default view is a typical over-the-shoulder camera, but the interesting thing is that there's no HUD at all. A tube of blue liquid down the back of your character's space suit represents your life total. Whenever you bring out a weapon, a small display appears on the model to give you information about your current ammo levels. Access panels and computers are interacted with by just moving towards them and pressing A. If an info panel pops up, or you bring up the full menu then it appears as a 3D object (a full in-world textured quad) in the scene. It's a bit tough to describe, but it really works. Things are so much scarier creeping down a hallway all alone without even a HUD standing by your side. As far as I'm concerned, Dead Space's UI should be the genre standard moving forward. The story is nothing special, but functional. It's just typical sci-fi fare that pushes the action along. If this sounds good to you then pick up Dead Space!

For $20 this game is a steal. Can't wait for part two. This is one of the few games that once i played through it I had to get all the trophies and finish it completely. If you haven't played it and like fps games then this is one to play. Although it's not an fps there are good reasons you see your character because all in game menus and life bars, etc. are on his suit. I played through this and then bioshock and i think i like this more. Both are great games for cheap now.

I got this game for the PC the other day and beat it in a couple of days. I logged about 13 hours of play time on medium. It is very addicting and easy to play for hours. The upgrade system is neat. The graphics and environments are great. The game gets started right away as you're just dropped into the action. It was amazing when I first entered the cockpit region/bridge room of the USG Ishimura, I was stunned how space looked outside the windows with the sun outside the window and floating chunks of rock. This game just looks REALLY good on its high settings. I haven't played it on low visual settings, but I wouldn't think they'd be too bad either. I like the change of gameplay with the zero gravity segments, small telekinesis sections and walks outside the ship's hull or other no oxygen locations. Audio wise, it's immersing too. The sound altering effect outside the ship is crazy. Can't hear the necromorphs sneaking up on you in space if you don't expect them. I really enjoy this game. I'll play through this game again on the more difficult settings. You can play through a second time on a cleared game save and continue with all your previous game upgrades and unlocked stuff. I highly recommend this game and it's cheap for PC. I had a problem with the game encountering an error on startup. I did some researching and this led me to gaming controllers or other peripherals could lead to this error on launching the program. It launch fine before for a while, but I have an unofficial psx/n64 adaptoid controller that doesn't always work. Well I unplugged it and tried launching the game and the game launched fine :-). I play the game with my belkin gaming pad with the left hand and mouse on the right. I mapped the keys as best as I could. There are certain quick keys that are permanent if you had a controller I think. I just worked around it. I just can't quick switch weapons. This is a game that you shouldn't pass up if you like survival-action horror in space. The story is really interesting too and there are lots of plot twists.

This is coming from a guy who watches horror movies all the time. Almost none of them scare me. This is a totally different story other than it being a game. It's scary as hell! Highly recommended for people who like horror movies/games.

THIS GAME ROCKS! Probably one of the best games I ever played. If I had to compare I can see many different similar games incorporated in this. Most notably would be resident evil. Even down to when you die and the blood coming across the screen. I also notice the kinesis seems very similar to the star wars games. Very cool though. And the aliens seem very silent hill / suffering. This game is pretty scary. I'm telling you this as someone who watches horror flicks to fall asleep to. Its not scary for what it is, its just that these aliens jump out at you whilst walking down a quiet corridors and at moments you least expect it. And if you have surround sound this game is perfect for it. You can hear aliens all around you, but don't know exactly where they are or what kinda they are. Also adds to the creepiness. I love how this game has many different elements, such as kinesis, stasis, z-gravity... The zero gravity is very cool, but also at the same time disorienting. Made me a little nauseous at times. The weapons are pretty cool too. The line gun was probably my favorite, especially once fully upgraded. The flame thrower was not so hot, but came in handy one in a while. Especially against the Brute and Swarm creatures. The line gun will probably be your main weapon since it is accurate, fast, and the ammo is abundant. I just finished playing this game on medium and it seemed a little easy. I might have been better suited to play this game on hard setting. The weapons and health seem over abundant throughout the game, although, there were a few times in the game where I had to fight past those aliens with very low health and ammo until I reached a point where I could obtain more. There are a few things which would make me give this game 4 stars (even though I gave it 5 because of its awesomeness). 1 would definitely be that this game is very buggy. There was a part in chapter 7 where I was supposed to remove asteroids from a zero gravity room, but the game never loaded them. It took me 3 days of trying everything possible, including doing every side mission I could before this part (which you are actually supposed to do afterwards), loading from other chapter 7 save files I had, making new ones, trying someone else's disc, trying a friends PS3 system, making new save files...nothing worked until I tried going back to a save file from the previous chapter. I had to do a lot of what I already did again which sucked but going into chapter 7 all over again somehow made the asteroids load into the game where they should have been. I contacted EA when it first happened but they were no help. They pointed me to their forums, but this game is from 2008 and it is now 2010. No one really frequents those boards anymore so I didn't get any answers. Shame on EA for making such a buggy game with no apparent downloadable updates and no support for when things go wrong. After being on the board I notice a lot of other people had very different problems like mine. Thankfully this was the only problem I ran into and got passed it. Another thing that I did not like about the game is the viewing angles. Its very hard to see and focus where these aliens are. I think a 180 turnaround button similar to what was in resident evil would have helped greatly when aliens are attack you from behind. But when they are coming at you it from behind its hard to turn all the way around and get the camera angle to focus on them without being attacked to much. It takes a while to get used to, but its still annoying all the way to the end. 2 more things to mention which isn't too much of a flaw..the sound track is nothing to boast about. I'd say it's generically theatrical. Also, I wish they just stuck to the alien aspect. I didn't like how they turned it into the whole human testing type of story. Seem too resident evil / zombie to me. At the end of the game they add a bit of replay value by giving you a new rig to buy, letting you keep what you had when you beat the game (besides the kinesis and stasis. you have to wait to obtain it in the storyline), and also giving you 10 power nodes and 50000 cash money. I don't usually replay games, but being I breezed through it so easily I may just humor replaying on the harder or impossible setting for more of a challenge and to max out my weapons. So to review IMO: GAME PLAY - 10 GRAPHICS - 10 STORYLINE - 9 CONTROLS - 8 SOUND FX - 10 SOUNDTRACK - 7 REPLAY - 7
